Over the past few weeks we've quietly migrated every hosting account on our servers from cPanel to Panelica. If you didn't notice, that's the point — nothing about your site, email or domains changed during the move. But the reasons behind it, and what it unlocks going forward, are worth explaining properly rather than burying in a changelog nobody reads.
Why we switched
cPanel has spent the last few years pushing its licensing toward per-account pricing, which means the cost of running a control panel scales directly with how many customers we host — regardless of how small or simple those accounts are. That cost either gets absorbed or passed on. We'd rather not pass it on, and we'd rather not absorb it into thinner margins that eventually show up as worse service somewhere else.
On top of the licensing model, cPanel's interface has aged. It works, but "works" and "pleasant to use" aren't the same thing, and a control panel is something we're in every single day on your behalf.
What Panelica actually is
Panelica is a modern hosting control panel built on the same fundamentals we already trust — nginx in front, PHP-FPM 8.4 handling execution, isolated per-domain configuration. The difference is the platform underneath it: no per-account licence fee, a faster interface for the admin work we do constantly (SSL, DNS, mail, backups), and an architecture that's easier to extend without waiting on a vendor's roadmap.
We ran the migration itself using the same discipline we apply to every customer hosting migration — full verified backups first, everything built and tested on the new panel before cutover, and the old configuration kept live as a fallback until we were certain nothing had broken.
What changed for you
Practically speaking: nothing you need to do. Your domain, files, databases, email accounts and DNS all carried over untouched. If your plan includes direct panel access, your login details were reissued and sent separately — everything else about how your site is served is identical from the outside.
The best migration is the one nobody notices happened. If you're reading this and thinking "wait, when did that happen?" — that's the outcome we were aiming for.
The concrete benefits
- Lower baseline hosting costs. No per-account panel licence fee means one less cost that would otherwise creep into pricing over time.
- Faster admin turnaround. SSL issuance, DNS changes and mailbox setup all run quicker on Panelica's interface than the equivalent cPanel workflow, which matters most when you need something changed same-day.
- A cleaner, modern dashboard for anyone on a plan with direct panel access — file manager, email, databases and stats without cPanel's dated UI.
- Faster patching cadence. A smaller, more modern codebase means security and stability updates land faster than they did on an ageing cPanel install.
What's next
This move isn't really about the panel itself — it's about what a modern, cost-efficient platform lets us build on top of it. Expect this to show up over the coming months as small, practical improvements: quicker support turnaround on hosting tickets, and headroom to keep hosting pricing where it is rather than raising it to cover rising panel licence costs.
Frequently asked questions
What is Panelica?
Panelica is a modern hosting control panel. On our servers it runs nginx in front of PHP-FPM 8.4 with isolated per-domain configuration, and it has no per-account licence fee.
Do XVN hosting customers need to do anything after the move to Panelica?
No. Domains, files, databases, email accounts and DNS all carried over unchanged. Customers on plans with direct panel access were sent new login details separately.
Why did XVN Web Services move away from cPanel?
Mainly because of cPanel’s per-account licensing, which makes control-panel costs rise with every account hosted, and its ageing interface. Removing that licence cost helps us keep hosting prices flat.
